Facilitated description:
Madonna and Child is a work on cardboard.
It is the preparatory drawing, that is, the model made by the artist before making the painting.
The painter Gaudenzio Ferrari made the drawing in 1520.
The restorers of the Centre for Conservation and Restoration "La Venaria Reale" (CCR) did a maintenance (small interventions) on the cardboard in 2017.
The restorers dismantled the cardboard from the frame.
They cleaned the cardboard from dust with a small vacuum cleaner.
They cleaned the plastic panel that protects the cardboard.
They have correctly repositioned the frame (wooden structure that is located behind the cardboard and serves to support the cardboard).
They eventually reassembled the cardboard into the frame and put cardboard around the design to protect it from contact with the frame and plastic panel.
Abstract of the intervention:
The conservative survey of Gaudenzio Ferrari's cartoon was carried out on the occasion of the exhibition The Renaissance of Gaudenzio Ferrari (Varallo, Vercelli, Novara, 24 March - 1 July 2018). The intervention provided for the control of the works to identify cases requiring minimal intervention and preventive maintenance. The adequacy of the exhibition frames was also checked.
Maintenance
The intervention provided for the cleaning of the recto and verso with microaspirator. The plexiglass cover has been dusted with a soft cloth and demineralized water. The tensioning of the frame was then performed. Finally, the cardboard was coated with conservative cardboard and Japanese paper to protect the work from contact with the modern wooden frame and plexiglass.
