90-CR-2022_Turin, Palazzo Carignano, Pilot shipyard on the decorated surfaces of the interior facade
Facilitated description:
In 2022, the La Venaria Reale Conservation and Restoration Centre made a pilot site (study site) at Palazzo Carignano in Turin.
The restorers have studied the central part of the interior facade.
This part of the facade was built during the 1800s.
The restorers have done cleaning tests for each material of the facade.
They did a lot of consolidation (reinforcement) tests on the decorations that were peeling off or that had cracks.
In this way they have identified the most suitable products and methods for the future restoration of the facade.
The restorers have done tests to find the most suitable material to protect the star-shaped ceramic decorations.
In the end they did some cleaning tests of the gate.
Abstract of the intervention:
Restoration
The pilot construction site on the decorated surfaces of Palazzo Carignano was carried out on the central nineteenth-century part of the internal facade. In the preliminary phase of the construction site, in-depth studies were carried out to study the constituent materials, the executive technique and the state of degradation. In particular, the differences with the part built during the 1600s were highlighted and the succession of restoration interventions was identified.
The aim of the construction site was to carry out several tests in order to identify the most suitable intervention methods in view of a future restoration. In particular, the following issues have been explored: the treatment of biodeteriogens, the cleaning of bricks and ceramics, the consolidation of decoese surfaces, the consolidation of cracks, the protection of ceramic materials, the filling of gaps, the repurposing of missing elements and the removal of paints applied on railings during maintenance interventions.
