CONSERVING CANVAS PROJECT, STRUCTURAL TREATMENTS ON DOUBLE-SIDED PAINTING
Conserving Canvas is a grant initiative promoted by the Getty Foundation. Its focus is on complex conservation treatments of canvas paintings which involve structural operations on the textile support. The initiative promotes the transmission of knowledge and skills at an international level through exchanges between professionals and training programmes addressed to young professionals working in the field of Cultural Heritage. Among the grant recipients there are many highly qualified institutions such as the National Gallery (London), the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, the Henry E. Huntington Library & Art Gallery (Southern California) or the Sweden's National Historical Museums, just to mention a few.
In the context of this initiative the Centro Conservazione e Restauro “La Venaria Reale” has been awarded a grant for a project concerning structural treatments on double-sided paintings with particular reference to a banner of the painter Giulio Cesare Procaccini belonging to the Pinacoteca di Brera (Milan). National and international experts will be involved to have a chance to confront and share ideas on the peculiar issues of this case study. Moreover, the Centre will host programmes for conservators who will undertake training activities in the Laboratory of Paintings on Canvas and Panel, in close contact with our staff.
We would like to collect case studies on double-sided paintings which present analogies with Procaccini’s banner in order to establish contacts and confront on the themes of the project. The call is addressed to conservators, museum curators and/or art historians who have addressed similar conservation treatments or studies on banners/canvases painted on both sides. It would be very valuable and interesting to be able to confront in particular on artworks with tears or stretching issues.
The case studies collected will be presented in the digital event "Case - Studies and professional experiences on double - sided paintings" scheduled for November 18, 2020. An Expert Meeting will be held in digital form on November 23, 24 and 25. in which technical themes of the structural treatment of the canvases painted on two sides will be discussed.
With the support of the Getty Foundation through its Conserving Canvas initiative, the Centre is pleased to announce a practical workshop addressed to conservators specialized in paintings on canvas.
The workshop will be held in two different editions: June 2021 and July 2021.
It will be an opportunity for 6 conservators (3 per each edition) to deal with complex topics concerning double-sided paintings.
