2 October 2025

Thanks to the start of the collaboration with the Vatican Museums for the study and restoration of the sarcophagi of the Egyptian Museum in Turin, the ‘La Venaria Reale’ Conservation Restoration Centre has become part of the international research project Vatican Coffin Project (VCP)

Launched in 2008 under the scientific direction of the Egyptian and Near Eastern Antiquities Department of the Vatican Museums, the project aims to deepen the knowledge of the executive techniques and materials that characterize the polychrome wooden sarcophagi of the Third Intermediate Period and other eras. The research aims on the one hand to define a real geography of artistic production, analyzing stylistic, formal and technical aspects; on the other hand, to develop diagnostic and intervention protocols shared at international level, to the benefit of the conservation and study of this extraordinary heritage.

In addition to the Vatican Museums, the Egyptian Museum in Turin and our Centre, scholars, researchers, curators, restorers and diagnosts from the Louvre Museum, the Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musées de France (C2RMF) in Paris and the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden participate in the project.

Project developments

These days, at the Asia, Africa and Mediterranean Department of the University of Naples ‘L’Orientale’, the General Meeting was held and the Centre presented two scientific contributions:

  • Measurement methodologies to assess conservation treatments. Validation of OTC for the cleaning of historical artefacts – Paola Buscaglia, responsible for painting on canvas and table, furniture and wooden sculpture, contemporary art.
  • Coffin pastes: First results and analytical methods – Tiziana Cavaleri, conservation scientist, and Francesca Gambino, conservation scientist at the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Turin.

This participation represents an important opportunity for discussion with the international scientific community and confirms the active role of the Centre in interdisciplinary research, advanced diagnostics and preservation of the ancient heritage.
