The Hall of Birds of the Royal Palace of Monza is one of the most evocative environments of the monumental complex. Its textile panels, commissioned to Carlo Antonio Raineri in Napoleonic times, are characterised by a refined ornithological decoration that gave its name to the entire room, formerly called the Sala del Caffè. It is precisely on these artifacts that the next intervention of the Restoration Conservation Centre ‘La Venaria Reale’ for the Consorzio Villa Reale and Monza Park.
This is not the first time that the JRC has come into contact with this area of the Palace: in 2021, the Centre had already carried out the restoration of the wooden and textile furnishings of the Birds’ Hall itself, accumulating a direct and in-depth knowledge of the materials, executive techniques and conservation issues specific to the environment. That experience is now a valuable technical and documentary heritage, which will make it possible to approach the new intervention with a vision of continuity and long-term conservation of the entire equipment of the room.
Due to their material complexity and the close relationship with the architecture of the environment that hosts them, the panels represent an emblematic case study. The Laboratory of Restoration of Textile Manufactures and the Laboratory of Wooden Furniture The JRC will deepen the state of conservation to define a project of intervention aimed at the relocation of artifacts.
The activity is a continuation of the work carried out by the JRC in 2021 on the wooden and textile furnishings of the room and is part of a wider project dedicated to conservation, research and training, also involving students of the degree course in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage.
