The canvas with theThe Last Supper of Santa Maria delle Grazie returns to Varallo after a complex restoration conducted, between 2024 and 2025, at the Restoration Conservation Centre ‘La Venaria Reale’.
Restoration, promoted by Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of Biella, Novara, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola and Vercelli, was financed with the contribution of the Ministry of Culture and the Cassa di Risparmio di Vercelli Foundation.
The painting, dating back to the early 17th century and large in size, was created for the refectory of the ancient Franciscan convent that flanks the church, now inhabited by the Missionary Sisters of the Eternal Priest.
Long kept in a room not accessible to the faithful and therefore little known, it now finds its public return in the permanent rooms of the Pinacoteca, where the Municipality of Varallo, owner of the church, has deposited the work.
To accompany the return of the painting to the territory, there are several moments open to the public at Palazzo dei Musei:
- 22-23 October, 14.30-18.00: Open shipyard, with free access, to attend the preparation of the large painting and interact with the restorers of the ‘La Venaria Reale’ Restoration Centre.
- 24 October, 17.00: Presentation of the restoration.
