They left the first operations of the restoration and enhancement project to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of the University of Addis Ababa, where the ‘La Venaria Reale’ Conservation and Restoration Centre, as a partner in the project, participated with the Politecnico di Torino – the leader of the initiative – together with local and international institutions.
In the company of the DAD (Department of Architecture and Design-DAD) working group, we met with the Italian Embassy in Ethiopia, the AICS Directorate, the Italian Cultural Institute in Addis, the Presidency of the University of Addis Ababa (AAU), the Directorate of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies (IES) and the heads of the Ethiopian Heritage Authority (EHA) for an alignment regarding expectations, needs, operational methods of intervention on Genete Leul Palace, This building now houses the Ethnographic Museum.
They were conducted a series of inspections aimed at a historical and cognitive analysis of the Palace, which ranks not only as a placement, but also in importance, at the centre of Addis Ababa University’s campus. The inspections made it possible to better understand its consistency, structure and state of preservation.
The operational technical meetings with the main local partners of the project, on the other hand, they have made it possible to plan the interventions to be carried out in the short, medium and long term. It will not only be about preserving the building, built in the 1930s and referred to as ‘the first modern building in Addis Ababa’, but also by Update the Museum to make it a reference point for campus life, and not just the place of conservation of important finds.
