From 18 to 22 May 2026, Turin is preparing to become the international center of scientific research applied to the archaeological heritage by hosting the 45th International Symposium on Archaeometry – ISA 2026, the most important event in the world dedicated to archaeometry. The symposium is organised every two years in a different city around the world and returns to Italy almost 20 years after the last Italian edition.
Experts, researchers, PhD students and students from all continents will discuss the latest scientific developments in the study of archaeological finds. In addition to archaeologists, the analysis of the past involves numerous scientific disciplines – from chemistry to physics, from biology to earth sciences, to computer science and mathematics – which contribute to interpreting and enhancing the material testimonies of disappeared civilizations.
All these interdisciplinary activities are called archaeometry, a research area that integrates different scientific expertise to answer archaeology questions: determine the age and provenance of the artefacts, reconstruct their production technologies and use, identify areas of archaeological interest before excavations, study the environments, flora and fauna of the past and understand the movements and migrations of ancient populations.
⁇ From material analysis to conservation, all disciplines of archaeometry will be at the heart of the scientific sessions.
⁇ With a novelty: A special session will be dedicated to the role of archaeometry in museums.
ISA 2026 is organised by the University of Turin, AIAr – Associazione Italiana di Archeometria , CCR La Venaria Reale, Museo Egizio, INFN and Musei Reali di Torino.
