| The Summer School and the conference on wooden and terracotta sculpture in Abruzzo
From 29 June to 3 July 2026 the Restoration Conservation Centre ‘La Venaria Reale’ participates in the Summer School – “Geographies of protection. Art and restoration between centre and territory”, carried out in collaboration with the Municipality of Calascio, the Superintendence and the University of L’Aquila. The initiative is part of the cultural, social and economic regeneration project ‘Attractiveness of Villages’, promoted by the Municipality of the city and financed by the Ministry of Culture through the NRRP – Line A, M1.C3 Investment 2.1.
The school – aimed at students, professionals and researchers – offers a high-level training course dedicated to study, conservation and restoration of wooden and terracotta sculpture between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. In particular, the main case study of the activities will be the 16th-century polychrome terracotta sculpture depicting San Leonardo, preserved in the ancient church of San Leonardo di Noblac, one of the most significant historical buildings in the village.
Two restorers and a JRC diagnostician will coordinate the study and evaluation of historical, technical, scientific and analytical data relating to the work, guiding participants on an interdisciplinary path aimed at understanding the artefact and its conservation context.
Through theoretical seminars, documentation activities and non-invasive diagnostic investigations, methodologies and tools useful for reading the work, understanding its executive techniques and assessing its conservation status will be explored. The planned activities also include digital acquisitions through photogrammetry and microscopic observations of surfaces.
Finally, the information gathered will form the basis for defining a future restoration project aimed at stabilising the work, studying the transformations that have characterised its conservation history and identifying compatible solutions for its conservation and enhancement.
🔸In conjunction with the conclusion of the Summer School, the 3 and 4 July will be held between L'Aquila and Calascio on international conference, an opportunity for discussion dedicated to the challenges of protection and conservation in the periphery that will bring together leading institutions in the sector.
