Facilitated description:
The 11 stools are made of gilded wood and fabric.
The stools were made in the early 1700s.
The stools are kept at the Hunting Palace of Stupinigi.
The La Venaria Reale Conservation and Restoration Centre restored the stools in 2006.
The restorers carried out a cleaning (cleaning the surface from the dirt deposited over time).
The stools had gaps (missing parts) of wood and gilding.
The restorers stuccoed the gaps (they themselves have a white layer of chalk and glue inside the gaps).
They painted the stucco with watercolor and gold colors.
They applied a product against insects that feed on wood.
They reinforced the leg joints of the stools and rebuilt parts of missing decoration.
They rebuilt the missing feet with the same type of wood.
In the end they painted the stools to protect them from the sun's rays and dust.
Abstract of the intervention:
The intervention is part of the first lot of restoration of the Hunting Palace of Stupinigi relating to the Levante Apartment. The project involved the furniture and furnishings of Lounge 8, Chinese Rooms 14-15 and Cabinet 10. The restorations were included in the interventions financed by the Ministry of Heritage and Cultural Activities with the proceeds derived from the lottery.
Restoration
The restoration of the stools began with cleaning with soft brushes and vacuum cleaners and then with rubber cloths and scalpels. Chemical cleaning of the golden surface followed. Subsequently, the most obvious gaps were plastered and the missing ornate parts with resin were reconstructed. The integrations were chromatically tuned with watercolor and gold shell colors.
On the wooden support an anti-tarlo treatment was carried out. The nails were then removed and the gluing of the joints and cruises was restored. Subsequently, the missing parts (feet) were reconstructed with the same essence of walnut wood.
Finally, a protective varnish was applied.
