Restoration report (04/1997-06/1997) and photographic documentation relating to the phases before, during and after the restoration of the painting Our Lady of the Rosary by Giovanni Battista Crespi (Cerano).

Facilitated description

The work "Madonna del rosario" by Giovanni Battista Crespi called Cerano is a painting on canvas of about 1618-1625 preserved at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan.
Restorer Pinin Brambilla Barcilon restored the work in 1997.
The restorer prepared the painting for a new tension of the canvas (repositioning the painting on the frame to keep it in the correct position, to avoid a change in shape and a problem with the color layers of the painting).
After protecting the painting surface, he reassembled the painting on the frame (structure that supports the canvas of the painting), giving back the tension suitable for good conservation.
Cleaning took place gradually, removing the dirt and thick layer of paint to bring out the original colors.
The restorer has made a plastering of the gaps (a white layer of gypsum and glue that extends inside a gap and that forms a smooth and uniform base on which to paint the additions).
Finally, he carried out the pictorial integration (reconstruction of the material or color of missing parts) with hatching technique (thin and small lines of color that from a distance recompose the shape of the missing part) and veiling (transparent layer of color).
A final layer of paint gave shine and protection to the painting.
