Extraordinary maintenance report

40-MT-2008_Turin, Royal Palace, J.B. Oudry, N. Besnier, The Chinese garden (tape), inv. 147

Facilitated description:

The Chinese garden is a tapestry, a large canvas work that hangs to decorate the walls. The tapestry represents a scene in a Chinese garden.
The tapestry is kept at the Royal Palace.
The La Venaria Reale Conservation and Restoration Centre restored the tapestry in 2008.
The restorers detached the tapestry from the wall because the upper part was detaching. They sewed back the pieces of tapestry that had broken.
They sewed a linen cloth behind the tapestry to reinforce it.
They stitched up the lining (canvas that you put behind the tapestry to strengthen it).

Abstract of the intervention:

The extraordinary maintenance of the tapestry The Chinese Garden, coming from the Royal Palace of Turin was carried out following a monitoring during the exhibition of the tapestry at the exhibition The palace of Venaria and the Savoy. Art, magnificence and history of a European court (Reggia di Venaria, 13 October 2007 - 30 March 2008). The work, in fact, was affected by the unstitching of the "stacks" located along the upper side, at the velcro.

Maintenance

The intervention was aimed at securing the weaving band at the top below the Velcro for suspension. We then proceeded to dismantle the tapestry and to review the uncut detachments and areas with lack of textile unity, consolidated through the method of conservative restoration. After unstitching the lining of the tapestry was applied to sewing a local support in linen canvas from the back. The lacerations were stopped with regular-cut stitches of neutral-colored yarn. Finally, the lining has been repositioned ensuring a correct redistribution of the voltage in view of the exposure.
