The workshop dedicated to paintings on canvas has been designed to accommodate and work on large-format works, one of the main areas of specialization in the sector.
In recent years he has been able to enrich his experiences and skills thanks to important case studies on works by Palma il Giovane, Tintoretto, Veronese, Bassano, Giulio Cesare Procaccini.
There are also numerous interventions on cores of works that can be assimilated by type or collectible origin, coming from the Savoy residences and from important Italian museums (Savoy Gallery of Turin, Pinacoteca di Brera, Civic Museums of Padua, Oratory of the Compagnia di San Paolo, Castello di Racconigi, Pinacoteca di Varallo Sesia).
In line with the approach shared by all the Centre’s sectors, the Laboratory promotes an interdisciplinary methodology using historical, artistic, scientific and technical expertise.
The Laboratory staff is also involved in preventive conservation projects and is constantly engaged in the scheduled maintenance of the Savoy Residences and in the preparation of temporary exhibitions with condition reporting.

Giulio Cesare Procaccini
The Last Supper
1618
Genoa, Church of SS. Annunziata of Vastato
The large size of the work, about 40 square meters, and the complexity of its restoration required the involvement of 9 restorers of the Centre and 4 alumni of the degree course. The work was first studied and the restoration started with two degree theses that mainly addressed the problems related to the support and cleaning methodology.

PROJECT CONSERVING CANVAS
In the context of the Conserving Canvas initiative, promoted by the Getty Foundation, the Centre presented a project focusing on the structural treatment of painted canvases on two sides, which involved various professional training activities linked to the complex conservative recovery of a painted banner on the front and back by Giulio Cesare Procaccini from the Pinacoteca di Brera.

Aurelio Luini
Miracle of the healed paralytic
1576
Art gallery of Varallo
The lean tempera painting on canvas by the Milanese painter Aurelio Luini, dated about 1576, comes from the Pinacoteca di Varallo. The work was carried out as an ephemeral apparatus that was to present the visitor with the contents of one of the Chapels of the Sacred Mount.
Due to its technical and executive characteristics and the extent of the degradation it presents, it has been a case study of great interest, around which an extensive research, restoration and valorisation project has been developed.

Andrea Schiavone
Adoration of the Magi
1547
the Veneranda Ambrosiana Library
Andrea Schiavone’s Adoration of the Magi is one of the masterpieces of the Dalmatian painter and engraver, active in Venice between the 1940s and 1960s. The restoration provided an insight into the history of the work and the technical procedures adopted by the artist.
Due to the extraordinary technical qualities and complexity of the work, the painting was also the subject of a training course for the students of the Degree Course in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage (University of Turin in agreement with the JRC).
At the end of the restoration, a special exhibition event in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana gave back to the public the work done by the Centre.
