Structural treatments on double-sided paintings: the complex restoration of a banner by Giulio Cesare Procaccini

With the support of Getty Foundation through its Conserving Canvas initiative, the Centre organised a practical workshop addressed to conservators specialized in paintings on canvas.
The workshop, focused on structural treatments on double-sided paintings, was held in two different editions:

First edition:
dates: 7th - 18th June 2021
participants: Valerio Garofalo, Alice Tognoni, Martina Quadrelli

Second edition:
dates: 18th - 29th October 2021
participants: Joanna Strombek, Luz Vanasco, Daniella Serrano

The practical-technical activity focused particularly on the banner by Giulio Cesare Procaccini from the Pinacoteca di Brera. It is a complex case of canvas painted on both sides which offered interesting insights in particular on the topic of tear repair.

PROGRAMME

The programme of the workshop included two weeks of practice and theory concerning structural treatments on double-sided paintings on canvas. During the first week, after an introduction on Procaccini’s artwork and its conservative issues, the visiting conservators tested methods and materials for tear repair on mock-ups and took part to seminars held by experts such as Petra Demuth, Hannah Flock and Matteo Rossi Doria. During the second week, the participants had the chance to put into practice what they had previously learnt, working alongside the CCR conservators on the complex case-study of Procaccini’s banner.
